Foster + Partners continues its growing interest in the use of wood for sustainable modern engineering development with an ambitious new project in London, England. The mixed-use development will feature significant sustainable design and, according to the high-profile British firm, will be one of the largest timber buildings in the city.
The project is called The William and will be part of a larger £ billion (approximately US$ billion) development in the Bayswater area of London called Queensway that will involve the removal of an existing post-war building that was in bad conditions. We have no information on its exact size , but it will clearly be large and, once completed, will house a mix of office and residential space, as well as commercial areas. Structurally, it will be composed mainly of cross-laminated wood.
“With six floors of offices alongside retail and new homes, of which will be affordable, The William is an integral part of the revitalization of Bayswater,” Foster + Partners said in a press release. "The development is named after William Whiteley , the eponymous founder of the Whiteleys department store located on the opposite side of the street, which is also being re C Level Executive List developed by Foster + Partners. “Whiteley will offer a further world-class apartments, new shops and restaurants, as well as London’s iconic Six Senses Hotel and Spa.”
The William is slated to receive the BREEAM Outstanding Green Building Standard for its energy-efficient design. In addition to the use of sustainably sourced wood, it will focus on maximizing natural ventilation and daylight with its generous glazing.
Vegetation will cover much of the roof and multiple terraces and the building will also have net zero operational carbon emissions upon completion, which involves the use of renewable energy sources, although we have no further information on this aspect at this early stage.
