Habitat or landscape fragmentation is basically the division of an existing type of vegetation into sections that are much smaller.
This usually happens as a result of the use of land for housing construction , agricultural activities, city expansion and the construction of roads and highways that degrade the existing habitat.
Habitat fragmentation has much deeper effects than the simple reduction of existing territory ; When all the sections that make up the habitat are not connected, a group of problems begin to arise.
In this ar Caseno Email List ticle in which we will focus on what habitat fragmentation is in all its types; but I will refer to the types of forest habitats, since they are the easiest to visualize.
habitat fragmentationWhat is the Habitat fragmentation process like?
Habitat fragmentation can happen in different ways, but this process usually follows a common pattern.
First, in an almost entirely intact habitat, a road is built that creates a dissection of the landscape.
At a global level, the network of roads and highways has had great growth and this expansion has caused the number of habitats that have not been dissected to be smaller.
Landscape drilling
By this we refer to the creation of small openings in forest habitats where buildings, houses and other structures will be built along the road. As this expansion increases as a result of the little territorial space that exists in the suburban belts, we can clearly see how the perforation of the landscape is being applied.
Fragmentation
This occurs when an amalgamation is created in open areas, and those tracts of habitat that were originally large are divided into small separate sections.
Wear
This step of the process occurs when growth and development gradually makes separate sections of habitat smaller and smaller where it reaches the point of almost complete elimination.
habitat fragmentationEffects of Habitat Fragmentation
Measuring the effects of wildlife fragmentation is sometimes very complicated to do, largely because both fragmentation and total habitat loss often occur at the same time.
Over many years of accumulated scientific studies, some of the main effects of habitat fragmentation on wildlife can be broken down. These effects are often extremely fatal for some species.
The main effects of fragmentation are:
Major Isolation:
The isolation effects of habitat fragmentation are known from many years of studies of island systems; When these sectors are separated and disconnected from each other, the amount of biodiversity that exists in each of them is more limited.
Something natural that happens in these cases (If we can call it natural) is that some wildlife species disappear from the habitat temporarily, but when the separation of these sectors is very wide, plants and animals cannot recolonize these territories, since They lose access to it, this results in a habitat with a reduced number of species that in the long term becomes an ecosystem that is missing a piece for its normal functioning.
